Looking for a museum to visit while in Amsterdam that doesn’t have a name you can’t pronounce? Well you won’t find it here. What you will find is an off-the-beaten track museum filled with collections of modern art and design. With both temporary and permanent exhibits, you are always sure to see something new here.
This is a museum devoted to contemporary art. Featuring a major solo exhibit of Marina Abramovic until July 2024, this excellent art museum regularly cycles through a whole host of intrepid artists that you can enjoy.
First opened in 1895, you can find the Stedelijk in the museum quarter of Amsterdam, near the Van Gogh and Rijksmuseum. The Stedelijk has undergone massive refurbishments in recent years, creating better event spaces and showcasing the work of multiple artists. Favourites include Chagall, Rietveld, Mondrian, and Kieth Haring.
This is an interesting museum anyway, but if you are a student of the contemporary masters then you do not want to leave the city without visiting the Stedelijk. You can see artefacts and objects the artist’s used in their lives, and even explore future famous artworks – even live art as it happens.
