ARTIS- Amsterdam Royal Zoo

ARTIS, short for Natura Artis Magistra, is a zoo in the centre of Amsterdam. It is the oldest zoo in the Netherlands and one of the oldest zoos of mainland Europe. ARTIS is home to 750 species of animals, including zebras, penguins, sea lion, giraffes, elephants and chimpanzees, making it an immensely popular attraction for families, couples and all-round animal lovers. But there’s more to ARTIS than animals, as it’s also home to 300 species of trees and many gardens that blossom beautifully every spring and summer. ARTIS also contains an aquarium and a planetarium.
A visit to the Aquarium and Planetarium are included in the admission ticket to the ARTIS-Park.

Discover ARTIS in a different way. Every Saturday and Sunday, tours depart from the elephant enclosure at 2pm. Join the guide and enjoy the interesting stories, not only about the animals and their behaviour, diet and care, but also about plants and monuments. On most weekend days, you can join a ‘Guided tour of ARTIS‘. On certain days and during special events, there are themed tours. All guided tours are available in Dutch and English

When will the red ruffed lemurs be fed? And at what time will the zookeeper tell about the jaguars? ARTIS Zoo has a daily schedule up online so you can plan which guides, talks and tours you would like to join whilst visiting the zoo. There are loads to choose from! You can enter Lemur Land, where the red ruffed lemurs roam freely. You can walk among these animals and observe them up close! There is even a Space Trip Activity in the planetarium, it is an adventure through space. Travelling faster than the speed of light, you will come across planets, moons, stars and entire galaxies. Sounds cool right?? There’s something for everyone so make sure you take a look at the schedule to see whats going on when you visit ARTIS Zoo.

Micropia

You can’t see them, but they’re here. They are on you. In you. And you’ve got more than a hundred thousand billion of them.

Microbes: the smallest and most powerful organisms on our planet. We know very little about them, but can learn so much from them. About our health, alternative energy sources, and much more. When you look  from really close, a new world is revealed to you. More beautiful and spectacular than you could ever have imagined.

The only museum of microbes, in the centre of Amsterdam.

My trip to ARTIS Zoo was definitely one to remember. One of the most cleanest and mesmerising zoos i have ever been to. It was truly beautiful! You can get really up close to animals, which was brilliant. The enclosures are so open, we even seen a baboon hunt its own snack… poor birdy! But it is amazing seeing the animals instinctive behaviour.

Before entering ARTIS we stopped off for some lunch at the beautiful De Plantage and wow! The place is stunning, definitely dining in style but surprisingly without the big price tag. It was a bright sunny day when we visited ARTIS so we sat outside of the Restaurant and we were facing a bird sanctuary which was a nice touch – lunching with a view. Definitely worth a visit, even if you aren’t planning to go the zoo! There are cafes inside the Zoo, one especially caught our eye, you can grab a bite to eat or drink and sit facing the giraffes and zebras. So peaceful and something you cant say you do everyday!

Overall, i would certainly dedicate some time to visit ARTIS Zoo as its an amazing experience suitable for all ages. A reasonably cheap day out with a ton of memories to take back home with you.
